With courage from this connection, Nisha befriends the Muslim neighbor girl she sees playing in the nearby yard. Being in the home where her mother grew up, Nisha comes to know her better, making connections with the paintings she left behind. Together in the kitchen, they cook for the family, nursing Dadi back to health. Once they are safely hidden in Rashid Uncle's home, Nisha's world expands again as she makes a connection with her uncle, who has a cleft lip and does not speak. As the family nears Umerkot, where Rashid Uncle lives in Nisha's mother's childhood home, they face danger once again, this time at knifepoint. Hiranandani's writing, in the voice of Nisha, is vivid and intense, especially when she is describing the challenge of traveling on foot, facing extreme thirst.

Things have slowly gone back to normal, except now the trio is thick as thieves so much so that they’re vacationing together! Ollie’s dad won a free weekend at a new resort opening up near their home of East Evansburg, Vermont, and Brian and Ollie can’t wait to hit the slopes. It’s been two months since Ollie, Coco, and Brian walked out of the cornfield after being missing for two days and into the arms of their terrified parents. Even Susie the Subaru got on the damn cover! (The fact that Ollie’s Subaru has a name tickles me, especially because I am a recent first-time owner of a dark blue Outback and we spent forever debating her name. The trees feel claustrophobic and everything is so moody and atmospheric. The smoke-skull hovering over the ski lodge is SO sinister. This is just perfect, and goes amazingly well with the previous book’s cover. (But why would you want to? The first book is awesome.) This is the second book in a series, though it’s possible to read as a standalone. Bonus Factors: Spooky Setting, Tasty Business, Ouija Boards And that Martian atmosphere is definitely no fun, lacking stuff like, oh, breathable air, and a reasonable range of temperature. Supplies on hand were only meant to cover a few weeks, maybe months. Dude missed his ride and there will not be another along for, oh, four years. Astronaut Mark Watney is definitely more screwed than most of us have ever been. These are the opening words of The Martian. How many have said them at least twice? Three times? Four? Those with hands still up, you probably need to make some adjustments to your approach, find a safer line of work, hobbies that do not entail long drops, stop trying the weekly specials at McBlowfish, or seek out people to date who are into less extreme…um…sports. Not everyone? I see we have some liars out there. How many of you have uttered these exact words? (or words to that effect). I’m pretty much fucked.Ok, show of hands. Darnielle flays the conventions of true crime to reveal the macabre and ordinary brutality behind sensationalised stories of violence. An impressively meta work that delivers the pleasures of true crime while skewering it.' * Kirkus, starred review * he's excellent at getting into the uncomfortable details of abusive homes and how fear sparks an urge to escape both physically and creatively. 'This smart, twisty novel about true crime books and the 1980s "Satanic panic" is a fine fit for him and his best so far. He evokes a powerful sense of place.' - Chris Power * The Guardian * 'Devil House brilliantly captures the pre-internet spread of news. It's better.' - Dwight Garner * The New York Times * It's never quite the book you think it is. I had no idea where it was going, in the best possible sense. His third novel, Devil House, is terrific: confident, creepy, a powerful and soulful page-turner. 'Quietly, as if stealing in on cat's paws, become, as a novelist, unignorable.
